On a Trout Ice-Fishing trip with Ben

There are so many great stories I could share with you about Ben and our interaction. I was working for an other company and fishing up in Canada on Cameron Lake with a fellow and made a statement I would love to live in this area. When we got back to work he stopped by my desk with a Dr. Ben Greenwell’s address at Rowell Laboratories in Baudette, MN. I fired off a resume, and Ben quickly sent back airplane tickets for use to come for an interview. That was 1969, I was going to only stay for 4 years before moving on....... Still here. I still have the letter Ben sent somewhere in my files, yes the lettering was in “Green Ink”. Rowell Labs was a fantastic place to work; if ever there was a company with a family atmosphere Rowell Labs was it. Everyone used to do things together and winter time many of us would drive up to Nester Falls, Canada and fly into various lakes to fish lake trout through the ice. On this trip I took Ben and Clyde Tyler to Showalter's Fly-In Fishing at Nester Falls, Ontario. Our day trip took us into Kay Lake where they dropped us off at around 9:00 AM and picked us up at 4:00 PM in the afternoon. Fishing was kind of slow so I took a flutter spoon and tied a single hook off on it and baited it with a frozen Emerald Shiner. I gave the set-up a big 5 foot jig a couple of times and set the rod and reel down on the snow and ice. I got into my equipment bag and retrieved a container of fresh raisin oatmeal cookies and headed over to Ben and Clyde to share my treats. I don’t remember but I am sure we exchanged a few tales when I looked over to my fishing poles and noticed one was gone. I slowly turned and walked back to my area, kicked the snow a little and said a few things under my breath. I turned my back ( Tip Moorman taught ) and pulled out spare rod and reel and quickly put it down the hole and never said a word to either of them. My brand new Pflueger Rocket reel that I had paid $16 dollars for was on the bottom of the lake. Now if you ever went on one of our Rowell fishing trips this was just a beginning of the adventure. On the way back to Baudette in our 67 Mustang going south of Nester Falls we had a blow out.... the left rear tire. We were traveling about 60 mph and I kept the car going straight and pulled over on the shoulder to stop. I remember Ben saying, “Wow you did a great job of driving”. We got it changed in the snow and cold and made it back to Baudette in a timely manner. The next Monday at coffee break all the men had an area where the benches were place in an egg shaped circle so everyone could talk to each other. Ben gets up with a huge smile and says, “ Bruce why don’t you tell everyone about the rod and reel you lost lake trout fishing”? I was sure I had pulled my loss off without anyone knowing it. Ben missed nothing and he had lots of fun teasing me over that. As Michele talked about I still can picture Ben standing up in his boat fishing the Rainy River working hard to catch that Walleye. Ben never went half way with anything but always with all his energy. A couple of times that I was down to Marietta I went over to Ben’s house to visit. He always had a project of some sort that he was interested in and would tell you about it. Tom had sent an e-mail when Ben was in the hospital with a telephone number where Ben could be reach at. I am so glad I called and had a long talk with him. His voice never changed and I would have recognized it without knowing who I was talking to. He told me all about his grandchildren and daughters that day. Wish I had called again. Bruce Burton
